Walking into a gym for the first time can feel intimidating. You do not know where things are, you are not sure if you are using equipment correctly, and you might worry about looking out of place. That feeling is completely normal, and it is the number one reason people put off starting.
Here is the good news: gym etiquette is mostly common sense, and nobody is watching you as closely as you think. At Anytime Fitness Ahwatukee North, we are a small neighborhood gym. The vibe is relaxed, the members are friendly, and everyone started somewhere.
Here is what to know so you feel confident from day one.
The Basics Everyone Should Follow
Wipe Down Equipment After You Use It
This is the golden rule. Every gym has spray bottles and towels (or wipe stations) near the equipment. After you finish a machine, bench, or mat, give it a quick wipe. It takes five seconds and it is the single biggest courtesy you can extend to other members.
Re-Rack Your Weights
When you are done with dumbbells, put them back on the rack. When you finish with a barbell, strip the plates off and return them. Nothing is more frustrating for the next person than finding 225 pounds on a bar and not knowing if someone is still using it.
Do Not Hog Equipment During Busy Times
If the gym is crowded, be mindful of how long you spend on a single machine. If you need long rest periods between sets, let people "work in" with you. That means you alternate sets with someone while the other rests. It is completely normal and a good way to meet people.
Keep Your Phone Calls Outside
Nobody wants to hear your phone conversation while they are trying to focus on a lift. Quick texts are fine. Playing music through your speaker instead of headphones is not. Headphones are your friend.
Ask Before Taking Equipment Someone Might Be Using
If you see a towel or water bottle near a machine, someone is probably still using it. A simple "are you still on this?" goes a long way. People appreciate the courtesy.
Things You Do Not Need to Worry About
Nobody Is Judging Your Fitness Level
Seriously. Most gym members respect beginners more than you realize. Everyone remembers being new. The guy squatting 400 pounds started with an empty bar. The woman running intervals on the treadmill could not run a mile when she started. You are in the right place.
You Do Not Need Fancy Gym Clothes
Comfortable athletic wear and closed-toe shoes are all you need. T-shirt and shorts. Nobody cares about your brand of leggings.
It Is Okay to Not Know How to Use a Machine
Most machines have instruction diagrams on them. If you are not sure, ask a staff member or a nearby member. People are generally happy to help. At Anytime Fitness Ahwatukee North, our staff can walk you through any equipment on the floor.
Pro Tips for Your First Week
- Come during off-peak hours for your first few visits. Weekday mornings (9 to 11 AM) and early afternoons are typically quieter.
- Start with machines before free weights. Machines guide your movement and help you build confidence.
- Bring a water bottle and a small towel.
- Plan your workout before you arrive, even if it is simple. "20 minutes cardio, then 3 machines" is a perfectly good first plan.
- Do not overdo it on day one. Soreness that lasts a week is discouraging. A moderate first session that leaves you feeling good is much better.
The hardest part of going to the gym is the first visit. After that, it gets easier every time.
