Getting Back to the Gym After Having a Baby — On Your Terms

You have been cleared by your doctor to exercise. You want to feel like yourself again. But the idea of walking into a gym for the first time in months — maybe with a body that feels completely different — is intimidating enough to keep you on the couch.

Anytime Fitness Ahwatukee is a small, low-key gym where nobody is watching you. It is not a packed fitness studio with mirrors everywhere and instructors shouting. At off-peak hours, there are usually 3-5 people in here. You can take your time, go at your own pace, and figure out what feels right without an audience.

We are open 24/7. If nap time is the only window you have, come at 1pm on a Tuesday. If your partner takes over at 8pm and you need 45 minutes to yourself, the gym is open. Your schedule runs the show, not ours.

Starting Slow Is the Point

Postpartum fitness is not about "bouncing back." It is about rebuilding strength at a pace that makes sense for where your body is right now. That looks different for every woman, and it changes week to week.

Justin, our personal trainer, has worked with postpartum clients and understands what safe progression looks like. He will not hand you a generic program and send you off. He will ask about your delivery, any complications, what your doctor said, and what you are dealing with physically — whether that is diastasis recti, pelvic floor weakness, back pain from carrying a baby all day, or just general deconditioning from months of limited activity.

What Justin typically focuses on for postpartum clients:

Justin has over 15 years of experience, with certifications in kinesiology, biomechanics, and sports nutrition. He has the background to modify any exercise for your current ability level and progress you safely over time.

The 24/7 Access Makes All the Difference

When you have a newborn or a toddler, your schedule is not your own. You cannot commit to a 9am class three times a week. Some days you have 30 minutes. Some days you have an hour. Some days the baby finally sleeps and you just need to sit in the HydroMassage chair for 15 minutes because your back is killing you.

All of that is fine here. Your key fob works at any hour. There is no minimum visit requirement, no class schedule to follow, and no one tracking whether you came this week or not. Come when you can. Do what you can. That is enough.

The HydroMassage chairs are worth mentioning specifically. After months of carrying, nursing, and sleeping in weird positions, the water-pressure massage beds provide real relief for your back, shoulders, and hips. Several members use them as their primary reason for coming in on days they do not work out.

A Gym That Does Not Make You Feel Weird About Starting Over

This is a community gym. JB, the owner, knows every member by name. The regulars are friendly and mind their own business. Nobody is going to stare at you, offer unsolicited advice, or make you feel like you do not belong.

Our members range from complete beginners to people who have been lifting for decades. Several are parents with young kids who come during school hours, after bedtime, or early in the morning before the house wakes up. You will not be the only one figuring out how to make fitness work around a kid's schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start exercising postpartum?

Only after your doctor has cleared you — typically at your 6-week checkup for vaginal delivery, or longer for C-section. We will ask about your clearance on your first visit. If your doctor has given you the green light, we will take it from there.

Can I bring my baby?

We do not have childcare facilities, but we understand that sometimes things happen. Call us at (480) 900-1616 and talk to JB about your situation. The 24/7 access means you can come when someone else is watching the baby — even if that is 9pm or 6am.

How much does personal training cost?

The 28-Day Total Body Reset is $49 and includes 4 sessions with Justin plus a custom workout plan. It is a great starting point for postpartum because Justin will design your program specifically around where you are right now. Regular training rates are available after the initial 28 days.

Can I try the gym before signing up?

Yes. Free 7-day trial, no credit card required. Come in, meet Justin, try a couple of workouts, and see if it feels right.
